Why does nike make football gloves exclusively for the NFL and NCAA? They make gloves like the nike g-tack and nike magnigrip impact for linemen. Nike magnigrip elite remix or the nike magnigrip threat and the nike magnigrip assasin for other positions also. Why cant they just make them open to the public?
It's all about licensing agreements.
One year it may be Nike, then Reebok, then Under Armor, etc...
All pro and collage sports equipment and jerseys are made by these manufacturers and are contracted by the NFL,NBA,NHL,MLB and NCAA to make them for all teams and players.
They are open to the public, but you'll have to buy them through an authorized dealer or the sports league itself. Here's and example of how it works.
NFL decided that Nike is the only one that make everything for them this year. So the Nike logo goes on that Dallas Cowboy Jersey this year. Nike sends the equipment and jerseys to all NFL teams and authorized NFL retailers. Nike gets a part of profit made from each sale of whatever they made from with the Dallas star on it. The NFL gets a part of the profit because even though Nike made it, the NFL owns the rights of the Dallas Cowboys name, logo and the NFLPA (Players association) has rights to players names, so the players also get a percentage of jerseys, bobble head, posters, t-shirts of theirs that may sell.
When you buy a Tony Romo jersey, the money just don't go to one place. A part goes to the store that sold it, a part goes to the distributor that got it to that store, a part of it goes to Nike, a part of it goes to the NFL, a part of it goes to the NFLPA, a part of it goes to Tony Romo, and the taxes go to your local government.
Nike and others want deals like this because it's guaranteed money.
